Overview:

American Institutes for Research (AIR) is hiring an Operations Administrative Assistant for a local position in its Lusaka, Zambia office. AIR is one of the leading social science research organizations in the world, using rigorous research and evaluation to enhance health, education and social development in Zambia. It conducts impact evaluations on a wide range of topics including cash transfer programs, early childhood nutrition programs, education interventions, health product distribution programs, and agricultural interventions. We partner with locally based researchers to provide context relevant policy analysis and to help build the research capacity in developing countries. The Zambia office is a new but rapidly growing office which serves as a local branch for all of AIR work in Zambia and Africa region.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish and oversee all financial management procedures of the AIR Zambia office
  • Collaborate on the preparation of budget projections and monitoring use of all project funds expended in the field, tracking expenditures by task and budget lines
  • Reconcile balances between checkbooks and accounting database monthly
  • Maintain accountability of all financial issues for the Zambia AIR office
  • Oversee the preparation of the financial reporting, reconciling balance sheets, monitoring cash flow and ensuring the timely transmission of financial reports to Headquarters (in Washington, D.C)
  • Safeguard checkbooks and assure adequate check supplies on both accounts
  • Assist home office staff, as needed, to assess and verify service providers and grantees financial capabilities to assure adequate accountability as required
  • Manage purchase orders for the procurement of equipment and supplies and/or services, according to requisite specifications for the project
  • Assist in managing field sub-contracts
  • Lead the update and tailoring of the Finance and Operations manual for the Zambia office
  • Manage personnel files and coordinate the implementation and maintenance of a personnel filing system
  • Work with Headquarters Human Resources (HR) to ensure compliance including preparing HR manuals and employment contracts
  • Track staff schedules including, vacation days, and ensure sufficient coverage when needed
  • Assist the Project Director in recruitment operations

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in business administration/Accounts, ACCA/CIMA Part II
  • At least two years of experience in a similar role
  • Computer literate, with working knowledge of accounting packages
  • Team player and able to work independently with minimum supervision

Our work contributes to policy and financial decisions at the national and international level in countries around the world.

AIR is seeking a Quantitative Researcher to join our International Research and Evaluation group in our Lusaka, Zambia office. The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand quantitative research management experience on exciting evaluations of development programs. We are available to fill this position anytime between now and summer of 2018.



Responsibilities:

The Quantitative Researcher responsibilities include:

  • Collect, compile, validate, interpret, and analyze data and trends using standard practices and techniques
  • Perform computer modeling or simulation or simple to moderately complex forecasting using standard software packages
  • Apply quantitative analysis techniques and methods
  • Work on moderately complex assignments under indirect supervision
  • Coordinate with local, regional, and international organizations on research opportunities
  • Communicate project updates and results to clientele
  • Conduct literature reviews and write sections of proposals and deliverables
  • Responsible for maintaining and checking the accuracy of data for assigned projects
  • Communicate project support needs and requests to senior management and clientele, provide administrative support where applicable
  • Utilize external resources to supplement, organize, and contribute to tasks and projects
  • Supervise local staff, including researchers, field workers or data collectors
  • Manage small to medium scale research projects

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in the social sciences, statistics, quantitative methods or related field plus 5 years of experience post degree or Ph.D. plus 2 years of experience.
  • Experience with STATA/SAS/R
  • Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software required
  • Experience working in Zambia
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently on detailed assignments
  • Willingness to travel as needed
  • Experience with research proposal development will be an added advantage

Qualitative Research Associate

Responsibilities:

The Qualitative Research Associate will:

  • Lead the qualitative component of evaluations including the design, data collection, and analysis of qualitative data
  • Contribute to collection, validation, analysis and interpretation of qualitative data using NVIVO or similar packages
  • Help with quantitative survey designs and translation workshops and with administrative issues as needed

He or she will report directly to the Zambia Office Director.



Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree is preferred in Social Sciences and at least 3 years of experience conducting formal qualitative research
  • Proficiency with NVIVO or similar packages
  • In-depth knowledge of Zambian context
  • Fluency in at least two languages between Nyanja, Bemba, Tonga
